Description: This is a free website that can be used to arrange words in a weird order.
Characteristics of Student: Any student would love this website. However, it can be used to catch and hold the attention of a student who has ADHD. This is great for students with ADHD because there is so much going on, on the screen that they have to pay attention to figure out what is going on.
Environment: I would use this mainly in the classroom to try and meet the needs of all the students in your classroom.
Tasks: This could help students brainstorm words of a topic.

Tech Tip: IPAD Usage

th (11).jpg
Description: In an observation before I observed Ipads being used in the classroom. Ipads are a great tool to use in order to get students engaged in the classroom. Ipads have so many different types of applications that can be manipulated for multiple instruction. I observed students using the Ipad to learn how to communicate with others. a child with autism was using the Ipad to tell his assistants and teachers what he wanted and why. Use Ipads in the classroom when ever it is possible because it gets all students engaged in the lesson and can be tweaked to meet the needs of all the students in your class.

LiveBinders: (Tech Tip)
LiveBinders is a great tool for older students. They can create binders online, collect PowerPoint slides or Prezi materials. This website is an effective tool for students to showcase their work and share it with others. I think this type of a website would be great for book reports or group projects. Students can collaborate online and work together.

Edmodo (Teaching with Technology)
edmodo1.jpg
One teaching with technology tip that I have observed this [[#|semester]] was presented to me during my observation. I saw Edmodo used in multiple classrooms throughout my visit at Chase Elementary. Edmodo is a microblogging system designed specifically for teachers and students. Edmodo provides teachers with a place to post assignment reminders, build an event calendar, and post messages to the group (their students). A website that is quite similar to Edmodo is Facebook. When observing, I saw one classroom teacher use Edmodo in order to answer comprehension questions about a story the students read. The teacher would post the question and then the students would answer the question as a "comment."

Tech Tip - Promethean Board

promethean board2.jpg

In the 6 hour observation at Dulaney High school I observed the usage of the promethean board. There are tons of activities that can be done on the board that involved paint, websites, word document and PowerPoint’s. The teacher had a website that was an addition and subtraction game and the students could use their hands to play the game. It was engaging and interactive. In addition she had pre-made assignments on paint that were very engaging that was all about living vs. non-living.

ELMO [[#|Document Camera]]
182513_s7.jpg
I have viewed that this document camera can project work that the teacher is modeling to complete for the students. The teacher can display notes, graphs, or even if the book during a read aloud. The zoom on this can magnify certain documents and details. There are many more uses for this which can all be applied to various subjects and lessons.

megaphone.png
Vozme is a free online text to speech tool. This tool allows students and teachers to type in vocabulary words and use for spelling and vocabulary review. Students can hear the words read back to them and hear the sounds within each word. This website helps students because they can hear the words aloud and encode the words internally. This tool provided multiple means of action and expression and engagement.

Price: Free!

This software allows you to create your own jeopardy game without spending any money and without using Powerpoint. This is an excellent way to check students for understanding and to make sure they are prepared for an upcoming test. At Chase Elementary, the teacher used this software to ask students about fractions and to make sure they were ready for their test. This gives students excellent visuals and this a great way teachers can ask questions in a variety of ways.

iPads are a great piece of technology in the classroom. There are so many different applications that can aid students in every single aspect of their schooling. The iPad can be connected to other devices, such as a keyboard or mouse, for students who struggle with fine motor skills. I saw the use of iPads at Maryland School for the Blind. They were wirelessly connected to a Brailler. I watched as students used an electronic Brailler to read a book. The electronic book on the iPad highlighted the words as the students read them on the Brailler so that the teacher could monitor where the students were. iPads can be used in so many different ways. Applications that aid in learning to ones that help with communication, the possibilities are endless.

Tech Tip- Elimination Cards
86603905-260x260-0-0_Beistle+Numbered+Table+Cards+1+12.jpg

When observing at Dulaney High School I noticed that one of the students had numbered cards on his desk. Throughout the day, the teacher would circulate around the room and always check in with this particular student. During one of the activities that were completed in class the student decided to be off task and distract the other students by laughing and talking to them. As a result, the teacher removed one of the cards on his desk. These cards were there for a visual reminder of the students overall behavior throughout the day. He had four cards on his desk, and the teacher stated if he could keep all four cards on his desk for a certain amount of time he would be rewarded. I feel that this is a great behavioral tech tip and strategy in which BoardMaker could be incorporated in constructing some behavioral visual to help students stay focused and on task.

TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY TIP Screenshot (20).png

PowerPoint

From observing at several elementary schools, both this semester and in the past, I have often found that any teacher who teaches with a PowerPoint, remains fairly consistent with the content and how it is presented to the students. In order to more greatly understand what I mean by format, I was able to find this website: http://www.crlt.umich.edu/inst/tips which talks about the do’s and don’ts of PowerPoint teaching presentations. I thought that this was a great site as it truly exemplified those that I have observed in the past.

Teaching with Technology: In class we have discussed the Kurzweil 3000 software or firefly app on the iPad. This software is an online text reader that makes any written text typed into speech. This tool was made to support the Universal Design for Learning. It includes tools for reading, writing, test-taking and study skills. This tool is useful for those with dyslexia, dysgraphia, struggling readers, and English Language Learners. This is one of the best text to speech systems I have seen. I also used this technology tool in my UDL lesson plan. Link:

Boardmaker

We have discussed the use of Boardmaker in this class. It can be used to create and print schedules with visuals for all students. A daily class schedule can be posted in the classroom that have accompanying visuals for students who are ELL of have any type of disability such as Austism. Individual schedules can be create for specific students who need to stay on task or need the stability of a set schedule. I found Boardmaker at this website:

Jennifer Sanseverino- Teaching with Technology Tip

Finding the most appropriate assistive technology for someone with a disability can be very tricky. Educators need to consider the individual who needs the technology and their specific strengths, limitations, and interests. The specific tasks or functions the assistive technology is expected to perform (such as compensation for a reading, writing or memory problem); the setting where the assistive technology will be used (school, home, workplace), and cost of the assistive technology need to be addressed as well.

smart-board-600i-interactive-whiteboard-photo.jpg

One teaching tip I have observed is that accessibility and use of the actual technology is a key component. Using the smart board, it is more accessible to students if it is on a tool that can be moved up and down depending on the height of the student, or if they are in a wheel chair. Using the technology is also essential, because it should be utilized to its fullest potential. To do this, when using the smart board it should be used interactively with students by using the clickers, and having students use the pens to do more than writing. The smart board could be integrated during any lesson from math to reading, it is all about the creativity!

One teaching tool that I observed at Timonium Elementary School was the use of the Youtube website. Before the day started the teacher went on Youtube and showed a video that had kids dancing to the music and introducing some of the moves to viewers. The website/video got the blood flowing in the student's, woke them up, and get them energized and excited for the rest of the day. The videos were interactive and encouraged the students to follow along and to be free and express themselves through their small time of dancing.

Brandon Auyeung

Gabriela Rezzonico- Tech Tip: One teaching with technology tip I would suggest is staying current with the technology your students are using outside of school and integrating that into the classroom. For example, if they are all frequent facebook users, allow that as a means of communication for group projects, rather than forcing subscriptions to other websites or apps. If you make an effort to know about them, as with anything, they will be more likely to respect you.

Padlet
capture.png padlet.png

A great way to incorporate technology in the classroom is to use a website called Padlet (formerly known as Wall Wisher). This is an interactive website where the teacher can post a question for the class and the students can each comment and create their own response. It is a real time website so as each student is typing, all the other students can see what they are writing. It is a great way to have all the students collaborate and build something together while everyone is still able to participate. It is all about making learning fun and interactive. If you aren’t having fun the kids won’t have fun either. By using a website like Padlet, it keeps things interesting and will make lessons more fun and engaging.

While observing at Timonium Elementary School, my teacher used a program called Vizzle that was used on with the smart board. The program created a file for each student and tracked their answers and results, which then created a spread sheet of their total outcomes. Each student took a turn going up to the board and answering various life skills questions, such as "You wash your hands with..." The answers were provided in both picture and text form. The student was instructed to click on the correct answer. If the answer was correct, the program would make a dinging sound and move on. If not, it would place a red X over the incorrect answer and allow the student to choose again. After the student finished all the questions, they had 10 seconds to pop the moving bubbles on the screen.

Kidspiration
  • Description: (Teaching Tech) The use of Kidspiration can be used to allow students to organize their thought before writing a composition. Creating a web to organize ideas, and transforming the web to an outline can be helpful in creating a composition.
  • TIP: Providing students the opportunity to organize their thoughts and ideas before assigning them an entire composition, allows for a more structured and thought-out paper. It also supports the importance of the pre-writing stage in the writing process and allows for brainstorming.
  • Cost: $29.50 for single computer software.
  • Link: http://www.store.inspiration.com
  • Characters: Students who may benefit from this resource/tool are students who have difficulty writing a composition because of the anxiety of a blank sheet of paper. Some students do not know how to begin their composition, and are unable to put their ideas into structured words and sentences. Providing an opportunity to brainstorm, web, and outline thoughts and ideas will assist students with difficulties in composing written work. More visual students will also benefit from this tool.
  • Environment: This resource could be used in the academic environment and the home environment to allow for writing structured compositions.
  • Tasks: This will help students with organizing thoughts into a web and outline before writing a composition. It provides a visual representation (web) and outline of what is to be written to provide a guide for written work

Teaching Tip- One piece of technology that I have seen really used extensively in a classroom is a schedule strip that is made for students ahead of time, as they complete a task they will pull it off the strip and move on to the next task. I have seen this used in a classroom with students who all have Autism. It allowed for them to keep track of their work and move through assignments with easy. Teachers can have one large in the front of the room that all students will be able to refer to in order to move through the assignments of the day effectively.
